Introduction to Dog Litter Box Training
Similar to paper training, a dog litter box confines the problem of eliminating indoors to a small area. That's where the similarities end.
If you are like me, you don't have the luxury of taking your puppy outside every two to three hours.
In order to protect your household, you need to come up with a solution so that your puppy doesn't eliminate all over the place.
While the majority of dog owners teach their puppies to eliminate on a bunch of old newspapers or special pads, I feel a litter box offers a much cleaner alternative.
Litter Box Benefits
Compared to paper training, litter box training offers numerous benefits…
- The problem of eliminating indoors is confined to a much smaller area
- Cleaning up is a lot easier
- Unlike newspapers, a litter pan will protect your floors
- The litter inside the box will mask the odor
But one advantage is less obvious -- there is a house training technique you can use that will make the transition from a litter box to eliminating outdoors a lot easier. Visit litter box training for dog to learn about this little trick.

How to Choose a Dog Litter Box
When evaluating dog litter boxes, choose the one that's big enough for your breed. For your puppy's convenience, pick a low-sided box or cut out a part of one of the box's walls.
You can even use a cat litter box, if the size suits your puppy. You may need to cut out a piece of the wall to allow for an easy entry.

What Else You May Need
From my own experience, dogs don't like to eliminate in a dirty litter pan. To keep your litter box clean, always put some dog litter on the bottom. It will also make it easier for you to clean the box.
Second Nature Dog Litter is made from absorbent paper pellets with odor control. It's designed especially for use in housetraining your dog to use a litter pan. It also makes cleaning up a snap - just scoop and get rid of the waste.

So far, so good...
While everything I said up to now doesn't sound too bad, there is one thing to consider...
Dog litter box use, just like paper training, forces you to housetrain your puppy twice. First, you will teach him to eliminate in his litter box. Then, just as he becomes proficient at it, you will start teaching him to eliminate outdoors and his litter box is a no-no.
Your puppy will become confused and, in extreme cases, may even go back to eliminating all over the house. The overall training period will be extended.
For this reason, it's best to use a dog litter box only when you need to leave your puppy alone for extended periods of time.
